Over 250,000 households are already receiving letters that they have been given a £150 off their winter energy bills as a part of the Government Warm Home Discount scheme.
The letters, which started to reach across England and Wales in the early weeks of the week of Tuesday, will be sent out during the next few weeks.
The single payment will assist the households to cope with the increased costs in the colder seasons.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer extended the scheme last year and an additional 2.7 million families are receiving support. Overall, the discount will be available to over six million households all over England, Scotland and Wales.
All qualifying households will be notified of their £150 payment to be obtained before January.
Most beneficiaries will have a £150 discount automatically applied to their energy accounts and they will not have to do anything. Nevertheless, some homes are required to provide more information to qualify their cut down such as giving an electricity bill or statement showing the name and reference number of an account holder.
In England and Wales, households are eligible to the scheme provided they have certain benefits that are tested by means-test and are registered on the electricity bill. These are Housing Benefit, employment and support allowance based on income, income support, pension credit and universal credit.
Those who need to be verified will be informed of the process through mail that will guide them to make calls to the specified helpline.
Sir Keir stated: “This cash injection will help people manage their bills while we fix the rusting energy system er inherited.
“Because it is only through our clean energy mission that we will get bills down for everyone in the long run, creating jobs and economic growth along the way “
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted that the Government was keen on solving the energy bills of the households.
“Letters will be dropping on doormats across the country this week containing welcome news for hundreds of thousands of families,” he said.
“This Government is determined to tackle energy affordability for families, and this winter more people will be helped as a result. And I would urge anyone who needs to provide extra information to follow the straightforward steps and make sure they get money off their bills this winter.”
The energy bill payment is coming when the households are struggling with higher costs during the recently updated price cap by Ofgem. The regulator increased the ceiling by two per cent since October 1 that impacted on common households across England, Scotland and Wales.
This change is associated with the autumn season when most residents will start heating their houses using their own heating systems.
