Due to the weather, NASA has scheduled Monday, Feb. 2, as the tanking day of the upcoming wet dress rehearsal of Artemis II at the Kennedy Space Centre of the agency in Florida. The earliest possible opportunity to start with the change is not before Sunday, Feb. 8.
In recent days, engineers have been keeping a keen eye on the circumstances as the cold weather and winds pass over Florida. Hardware capabilities have been evaluated by managers in contrast to the forecast made considering the rare arctic outbreak that the state was facing, and they have decided to redefine the timeframe. At the launch pad, teams and preparations are still on standby for the wet dress rehearsal. Nevertheless, a timeline shift of the test will place NASA on the path of success in the rehearsal, as the weather forecast for the course of the weekend would be against the launch requirements.
Although NASA will not necessarily establish a date on which the launch will occur before teams are able to assess the results of the wet dress rehearsal, Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 are no longer options.
“Any additional delays would result in a day-for-day change,” NASA said in a statement on Friday.
In Houston, the Artemis II crew is under quarantine. Managers are evaluating the timescale of the arrival of the crew.
The simulated launch window starts when the wet-dress rehearsal activity commences at 9 p.m. EST, February 2, with the countdown commencing around 49 hours ago. NASA will go on with the continued assessment of weather conditions before the test.
As the cold weather is underway, the engineers have kept Orion on the power and adjusted its heaters to the lower temperatures. The weather is also programmed in purges, which are necessary to ensure the rightful environmental conditions of the elements of the spacecraft and rockets, such as the booster aft skirts.
An online live stream of the rocket at the launch pad is active 24/7. NASA will be available with its own separate feedback that will be used to capture wet dress activities. The agency will also give real-time updates on the test in the form of blogs when the test is being conducted.
