Britain Braces for First Big Freeze of Winter 2025

Britain is preparing for a sharp drop in temperatures as the first big freeze of winter 2025 approaches. The cold snap is expected to start around October 22 and last into October and early November. 

Temperatures could fall below freezing in many parts of the UK. Scotland is likely to see below-zero temperatures, with northern and northwestern England also facing a significant chill. Some areas may experience lows near -3 degrees, especially in parts of Scotland such as Fort William and the Highlands.

The coldest day is expected to be Monday, October 27, when Wales could see temperatures drop to -1 degree. Other parts of the UK will also feel the effects of the cold air, with northern cities like Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Glasgow facing temperatures near or below freezing by midday.

Even southern cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester will see temperatures hovering around 3 to 4 degrees during this cold spell.

Forecasters warn of gusty winds and potential rain in some regions, especially in the southern parts of the UK, where low-pressure systems are predicted to bring unsettled weather. The south-east may experience more rain than usual, while north-western Britain will see rainfall closer to normal levels. 

Despite the cold and wet weather, eastern Scotland might enjoy slightly more sunshine than usual during this period. 

The UK Met Office states that high pressure will initially dominate early in the cold period, keeping much of the UK dry with some fog patches clearing by morning. However, from mid- to late October, low-pressure systems from the west are expected to bring wetter and windier conditions. 

There remains some uncertainty about the exact extent and timing of unsettled weather, but the overall trend points to a colder and more wintry end to October. 

Snow is possible mainly in the Scottish Highlands, with forecasts suggesting up to 7 cm could fall by the end of October. However, general snow across much of the UK is unlikely in the next two weeks. The freezing temperatures and wet weather raise concerns for travel and health, with icy roads and cold conditions increasing risks for vulnerable people. 

Meteorologists also note that the wider winter of 2025-2026 may see more cold spells due to factors like La Niña and a weaker polar vortex. These global climate influences increase the chances of a colder season across northern Europe, including the UK.
