The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Monday that tomato sauce is being recalled because of the possibility of contamination with bacteria.
The FDA reports that the recalled sauce was prepared without any approved schedule procedure and the inability to process tomato sauce properly may result in the Clostridium botulinum toxins.
Three of its tomato -based products are in recall by the First and Last Bakery, LLC in Connecticut which according to a press release issued by the U S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday.
Three of the products that are being recalled are: First and Last Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato and Basil, First and Last Meat Flavoured Original Traditional Pasta Sauce and First and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mildly Hot and Spicy.
Sauces which come in 26 FL OZ jars, would be sold in Thomas, Connecticut and Massachusetts at Big Y and Stop & Shop stores in September 22, 2025. The Use By Dates of them are September 2026. The FDA has suspended the sale and manufacture of these sauces in order to comply with all the regulations.
Though sickness due to the sauces have not been reported yet, customers have been advised to send it back to the selling point to be refunded in full.
Clostridium botulinum may be present in products not processed, acidified, or low-acid canned foods, and may cause botulism. Botulism may cause such symptoms as weakness, dizziness, double -vision, and difficulty in speaking or swallowing.
Other symptoms that are likely to be common include difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. The FDA notes that people that have these issues should consult a physician at once.
The recall of the sauce follows Nate fine foods of Roseville California recalling 245,000 pounds of linguine fettuccine penne and other pastas that had been sold to massive manufacturers of heat and eat foods and pasta salads, such as Walmart and Target.
It was revealed through tests that the pasta was made using the same strain of Listeria that has been causing deaths and illnesses in four people and 20 others since August 2024 during an outbreak.
As reported earlier this month by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2 more people have died and 7 more were ill because of the listeria outbreak associated with pre-cooked pasta meals, bringing the total number of fatalities to six and number of people who fell ill to 27 across 18 U.S. states. Recent deaths were recorded in Hawaii and Oregon, and they were on top of earlier deaths in Illinois, Michigan, Texas and Utah.
