Google seems to be gearing towards the implementation of a significant change that will affect millions of users, albeit in a positive manner. The tech giant based in Mountain View has amended the support page, in which it says that users can now finally change their Gmail address without losing access to their account. Before the email address has gmail.com, the user can edit the first section before it, and the Google account, with contacts, Drive files, emails, and photos, will remain the same.
To date, Google has been allowing users to change their email, but only when they have a third-party email. In case it was followed by @gmail.com, they could only delete the old account and create another Gmail account. That, however, is now poised to change (through 9to5Google).
The company has also revised its support page to communicate with users that there will be a new change, and they will need to choose a new Gmail address. It is also claimed to be gradually rolling out this functionality, and it is located in the Google Account settings.
The page also shows the option of changing the Google account email address from the ending gmail.com to a new email address with an ending gmail.com.
After the user chooses a new Gmail address, the old one will be used as an alias. The company will not lose all the contacts, Drive files, emails, photos, purchases and subscriptions, etc. The old mail address will still be operational, and the emails sent to it will be received in the mail box. Users will have the option of using their previous or newly created Gmail account to sign in. Sign-in access support to services such as Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and Maps will not be affected. The support page describes a few important specifics of the address change operation upon its implementation. First, users are allowed to update their Gmail address every 12 months. There is a possibility to change it 3 times, and it implies 4 email addresses per account.
According to Google, no other person can possess the old Gmail address, and it will remain attached to the current account. The company also elaborated that changing the Gmail address can cause problems when using the services and functions of Google.
Users of the Chromebooks, Google Convenience, and Remote Desktop are required to take a few additional steps; the steps are outlined on the support page. Google has also informed them to save up their data and take care of the possibility of app settings being restored. The company also added that it is as simple as tapping in a new device.
