Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a brand-new Stargate television series to stream exclusively on Prime Video, marking a major revival for the beloved sci-fi franchise. The series is steered by Martin Gero, a longtime Stargate veteran who will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.
Gero, recalling his early work on Stargate: Atlantis, said, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor … Stargate taught me everything … it’s written into my DNA.” He added that this new installment is “for those who’ve kept the gate active … and for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
On the production side, Gero is joined by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures (known for Obi-Wan Kenobi), as well as Stargate franchise originals Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, both of whom were involved in the 1994 Stargate film. Meanwhile, longtime Stargate creatives Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will serve as consulting producers.
According to Amazon, the new series is not a reboot but a fresh chapter within the established Stargate universe. This continuity-focused approach is designed to appeal both to die-hard fans and newcomers who may not be familiar with decades of Stargate lore.
Nick Pepper, Head of U.S. SVOD TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios, emphasized the significance of the project:
“We’re honored to open this next gate … to bring a visionary new chapter … one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
While plot details, casting, and a production timeline have not yet been revealed, industry insiders confirm that the show is already in pre-production. Fans will be waiting closely for further updates as Amazon and its creative team prepare to transport audiences through the Stargate once more.
