Nintendo has officially revealed Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the long-awaited sequel to the quirky life-sim series, for the Nintendo Switch. The game is set to launch in April 2026 for Nintendo Switch and will also be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2, thanks to backward compatibility.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is the third main entry in the Tomodachi series, following the Japan-exclusive Tomodachi Collection on Nintendo DS and the 2013 3DS hit Tomodachi Life. The new game keeps the same playful, Mii-driven charm but adds more modern social-sim features and deeper customisation.
Nintendo showed off the title in a dedicated 20-22 minute Nintendo Direct focused entirely on the game. The Direct highlighted how players can create Miis, give them personalities, and give them jobs and hobbies and watch them live their own odd little lives on a small island community.
One of the most talked-about points is Nintendo’s promise to make relationships more inclusive. The company confirmed that Living the Dream will support same-sex relationships and non-binary options, a change from the 3DS version, which faced criticism for not allowing same-sex romance. Nintendo said this update is part of its effort to be “more inclusive” in future titles.
The game’s world is built around a colourful island where Miis can work, shop, date, marry, and even move in together. Players can run a clothing store, a supermarket, a renovation center of apartment decor, and a market stall that sells strange items such as a lion. A photo studio lets users capture funny moments, and a news channel on the island keeps players updated on what their Miis are doing when they are away.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream also introduces a Studio Workshop where players can design 2D pets and customise food, clothing, and even TV channels for their island. Romantic storylines return, including love triangles, marriages, and the option to have up to nine Miis live together in shared spaces.
Nintendo has not announced a separate “Switch 2 Edition” of the game. The title will run on the original Nintendo Switch and be fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. Still, no specific graphical or feature upgrades for the newer console have been revealed yet.
The release date of April 16, 2026, marks roughly 13 years since the original Tomodachi Life launched on the 3DS on April 18, 2013. Fans have waited over a decade for a proper follow-up, and Nintendo is positioning Living the Dream as a major social-sim title for the Switch family.
With its mix of humour, customisation, and inclusive relationship options, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream looks set to bring the series’ quirky charm to a new generation of players on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
